Never Run Out of Stock Again with Odoo 17 Reordering Rules
Maintaining the right inventory level is one of the biggest challenges for growing businesses. Keeping too much stock increases storage costs and ties up valuable capital, while keeping too little inventory leads to stock shortages, delayed deliveries, and dissatisfied customers. Whether you operate a manufacturing company, wholesale business, retail store, or distribution company, Odoo 17 provides a smart inventory management system that automatically creates replenishment orders whenever stock reaches a predefined minimum level. Because the entire replenishment process becomes automated, purchasing decisions become more consistent and significantly less prone to human error.
How Reordering Rules Work in Odoo 17
Reordering rules in inventory management are essential to ensure that businesses maintain an optimal level of stock and are able to meet customer demand efficiently. These rules help in determining when and how much inventory should be reordered to prevent stockouts or overstock situations. Some businesses adopt a JIT approach, where inventory is ordered and received just in time to meet customer demand. Reordering rules play a crucial role in JIT systems by triggering orders based on real-time demand signals. Effective reordering rules contribute to a more efficient supply chain by ensuring that the right amount of inventory is available at the right time. This can lead to smoother production and distribution processes.
Automated reordering systems in Odoo 17 ERP Software based on predefined rules help reduce the risk of human error in manual ordering processes. This improves the accuracy of orders and minimizes the chances of overstocking or stockouts. Businesses often experience fluctuations in demand based on seasons or specific events. Reordering rules in Odoo can be adjusted to account for these variations, ensuring that inventory levels are aligned with expected demand during peak periods.
In this article, you’ll learn how to create and manage Reordering Rules in Odoo 17 to maintain optimum inventory levels. First, open the Product Configuration form by following the navigation path below.
Inventory Application → Products → Products → Select the Product

Open the Product Configuration Form
In the Odoo 17 Inventory module, select a Storable Product because reordering rules only work for inventory items. Next, click the Reordering Rules smart button to view or create inventory rules for the selected product. You can also access other smart buttons such as BoM, Documents, Moves History, Putaway Rules, and On Hand Quantity from the same product page.

Click New to create a reordering rule. Odoo automatically displays the product name, warehouse location, available quantity, and forecast quantity. Next, choose the appropriate route under the Route field. Available options include Purchase, Manufacture, Replenish on Order, and Resupply/Subcontractor. In this example, select Purchase as the replenishment route.
Enter the minimum stock level in the Min Quantity field. Whenever the available quantity falls below this value, Odoo automatically creates a purchase order for the selected vendor. Next, specify the desired stock level in the Max Quantity field. Finally, enter the minimum replenishment quantity in the To Order field. Odoo uses this value when it generates purchase orders during replenishment.
Configure Minimum and Maximum Stock Levels
Odoo allows you to run reordering rules either manually or automatically. First, enable the Trigger field from the additional options. Then choose either Manual or Auto. If you select Manual, run the Scheduler from the Operations menu whenever you want Odoo to process the replenishment.

When you run the scheduler, Odoo checks the inventory level and automatically creates replenishment orders whenever stock drops below the configured minimum quantity.
Run the Replenishment Process
You can also create replenishment orders directly from the Replenishment screen by following the navigation path below.
Inventory App => Operations Menu => Replenishment

The Replenishment page displays options such as Order Once and Automate. Click Order Once to generate a Request for Quotation (RFQ) instantly in the Purchase module.

Odoo displays a confirmation message with the newly created replenishment reference. Next, open the Purchase module to review the generated RFQ.
Purchase Application => Orders Menu => Requests for Quotation => P00025

The RFQ contains the vendor details and the selected product. Review the information and click Confirm Order to create the purchase order.

After confirming the RFQ, Odoo creates the purchase order immediately. Next, click Receive Products to record the incoming inventory.

Verify the received quantity and then click Validate to complete the receipt.
Return to the Drawer Black product page. The On Hand Quantity now shows an increase of four units because Odoo processed the replenishment rule and updated the inventory automatically.
If you want to access all the Reordering Rules configured in your Odoo Inventory System, you can find it in the following path below:
Inventory App => Configuration Menu => Products Section => Reordering Rules

View All Reordering Rules
Instead of opening individual product pages, create and manage Reordering Rules directly from this screen by clicking New. This approach saves time, especially when managing a large inventory.
